Frequently asked questions.

Q. Why do the utilities not co-ordinate their work and share an excavation? A. It is the responsibility of all of the utilities and Roads Service to Co-ordinate their work, although this is not always possible. Depth requirements are determined by type of utility. Trench-less methods utilising existing duct/pipes or directional drilling are becoming more frequently used.
Q. Why does Roads Service let the utility companies dig up the roads.

A. The utilities have a statutory right to place their equipment in the public road. There are few cases where Roads Service could prevent an utility carrying out its works. Roads Service and the utilities are responsible for co-ordinaton of their works. This process is helped through electronic computer database exchange known as NISRANS.

Q. What should I do if I am not happy with the way work has been carried out

A. You should contact the utility in the first instance, or if you would rather, contact your local DRD Roads Service Section Office.
